Application generally requires people to be:

  • A permanent U.S. resident for at least five years (marriage to a U.S. citizen may reduce that time period, depending upon circumstances)
  • Living in the U.S. for at least half of those five years, with no extended overseas visits (marriage to a U.S. citizen may reduce that time period, depending upon circumstances)
  • Living for at least three months in the state where the petition is filed
  • Living in the U.S. continuously from the date of application to the admission to citizenship
  • Able to read and write elementary level English (exceptions apply for certain permanent residents over the age of 50, who have been residents for 20 years and 55, who have been residents for 15 years)
  • Familiar with the basic system of the U.S. government and U.S. history (exceptions apply for certain permanent residents over the age of 65 and have been residents for 20 years)
